Description of the event

This 2-day workshop focuses on oral narrative assessment and intervention for children (pre-school through adolescence) across two narrative contexts: personal narratives and fictional narratives. It uses case-studies and provides hands-on practice in analysing oral narratives and in assessment-based goal setting, evidence-based intervention planning, and progress monitoring.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the predictive and concurrent links between oral narrative production and comprehension and a child’s academic performance.
  • List current assessment tools for eliciting a range of narrative discourse samples from children and adolescents).
  • Analyse narrative discourse samples (personal narratives and fictional narratives) at micro- and macrostructure levels.
  • Outline best practice related to narrative intervention for children with spoken and/or written language disorders, including children with developmental disabilities.
  • Explain the importance of both skills-based and strategy-based strategies when providing narrative intervention for children with spoken and/or written language impairment.
  • Develop individualised and /or classroom-based narrative intervention plans
