Description:

The Lidcombe Program is an evidence based, behavioral treatment for early stuttering. The treatment is administered by parents under the supervision of a speech language pathologist. Research has shown that children can maintain high levels of speech fluency following treatment.

This workshop is designed for speech language pathologists who are interested in working with young children who stutter. The workshop will include short lectures, group activities, viewing and discussion of clinic visit videos, and case discussions.

Learning Objective:

    • Understand the rationale and concepts of the Lidcombe Program
    • Confidently conduct the components of the Lidcombe Program – training parents, speech measures, therapy, and maintenance

Biography of Speakers

Dr. Valerie LIM is an associate professor and programmer leader of the Speech and Language Therapy, Health and Social Science Cluster at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). Valerie has more than 20 years of experience working in the field of stuttering. She has successfully treated many children who stutter using the Lidcombe Program in Singapore, Malaysia, and China. She continues to teach stuttering at the National University of Singapore and SIT, and conducts professional development courses internationally. Valerie completed her PhD at the Australian Stuttering Research Centre. Her research interests include assessment and treatment of bilinguals who stutter. She continues to supervise students and speech therapists in stuttering both clinically and in research projects.

 Dr. Thomas LAW is an assistant professor, deputy chief of division at the Division of Speech Therapy, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and the clinical director of the Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology Programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has worked with children and adults who stutter for more than 15 years. Thomas has provided Lidcombe program to English, Cantonese and Mandarin-speaking children in Australia, Hong Kong and China. He teaches fluency disorders at several universities in Hong Kong and is a frequent speaker on stuttering-related professional development events. Thomas completed his PhD at the Australian Stuttering Research Centre, The University of Sydney. His research focuses on the topography and linguistic features of stuttering.

      • All video or audio recording, or using mobile devices for filming or photography is prohibited during the seminar.
      • Contingency Plan in case of Bad Weather: If Typhoon Signal No. 3, Red or Amber Rainstorm Signal is hoisted, the seminar will be held as scheduled. If Typhoon Signal No.8 or above, or Black Rainstorm Signal remains hoisted by 6:30am on the event date, or other unforeseeable circumstances, the seminar will be cancelled. You will be informed of the re-scheduled arrangement by email in due course.
