Biography of Speakers

Ms. YIU Oi Yan, Yoyo is a speech therapist from the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital (HKCH). She received her academic and post-graduate training from the University of Hong Kong (BSc Speech & Hearing Science and M MedSc). She started her speech therapy experience in a pre-school setting prior to joining the Hospital Authority. One of her clinical and research interests is the Cleft Lip and Palate population, with the centralization of paediatric cleft services to the HKCH and her involvement in the development of C-CSAT. Ms. Yiu has a strong collaboration with the medical team in both clinical services and research. Her work on cleft lip and palate has been presented in various local and international conferences.

Ms. CHOI Kai Yan, Cello has a Bachelor’s degree from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages of CUHK and became a speech therapist after completing the Master of Speech Therapy programme at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. There, she had the opportunity to work with clients with a cleft condition within the Cleft Lip and Palate clinic with Prof. Pereira. Ms Choi worked in Queen Elizabeth Hospital after graduation and continued to maintain an interest and passion for cleft speech. Her role in the working group and development of the C-CSAT was around her academic background in phonology and phonetics and her clinical speech therapy experiences in the area of cleft lip and palate. She was recently transferred to the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital.

Ms. CHAN Ching Shun, Sabina has been serving public hospitals as a speech therapist over 20 years. She has been the team head of the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital ST team. At that time, she worked with her team to provide in and out-patient service for paediatrics including cleft. She also participated in developing the C-CSAT and doing researches for this group of patients. She is currently working in Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Prof. PEREIRA Valerie Jane has been in the field of Craniofacial conditions and Cleft lip and Palate (CLP) for over 15 years. She is the current Chair of the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial committee for International Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders IALP and a board member. She serves on the teaching Faculty for the 2022 Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop (CCCW), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and is also on the International Advisory Committee for the 14th International Cleft Congress, Edinburgh 2022. She is currently working closely with members of the Global Speech Task Force for the Confederation of International Confederation for CLP & Related Craniofacial Anomalies (www.iccpca.org).
