Description of the event

This 2 day workshop will provide an overview of cognitive communication disorders following traumatic brain injury using the most recent models and frameworks. It will include a description of the characteristics of CCD, differential diagnosis from other related neurological disorders, as well as provide practical ways to assess and treat these disorders, aligned with current international recommendations and guidelines. Participants will learn about digital health advances, freely available education and training materials, and online treatment options. Communication partner training will also be featured, with an emphasis on how to include families, carers, friends and social networks in the communication rehabilitation process.

Biography of Speakers

Prof. Leanne Togher , is an internationally recognised leader in cognitive‑communication disorders and acquired brain injury rehabilitation. She is the recipient of multiple NHMRC Fellowships, including the prestigious NHMRC Investigator Grant (L3), the first ever awarded to a speech pathologist in Australia. A speech pathologist by training, Professor Togher began her career with more than 15 years of clinical practice supporting people with brain injury and their families. She now directs the Acquired Brain Injury Communication Lab at The University of Sydney, where her research has shaped global best practices in communication rehabilitation, family‑centred intervention, and supported communication training. Professor Togher has published over 250 papers, four books, and more than 20 book chapters, and has attracted over $40 million in competitive research funding. Her contributions have been recognised with major awards from Speech Pathology Australia, ASSBI, ASHA and the NHMRC Elizabeth Blackburn Clinical Research Fellowship. She serves on several international boards and editorial committees, including as Chair of the International Brain Injury Association, Chair of Brain Injury Australia and Chair of the Editorial Board for Brain Impairment. She is an editorial board member of several international journals including International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders and the International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Professor Togher also contributes to global policy development as a member of the World Health Organization’s Traumatic Brain Injury Interventions Development Group..

  • Guidelines and frameworks describing CCD and social communication following traumatic brain injury; INCOG 2.0; SoCIAL framework
  • Assessment of CCD following TBI; standardised and non standardised approaches
PM:
  • TBIBank Protocol 2.0; Discourse assessment, rating conversations using Bond and Godfrey and Adapted Kagan Scales
  • Goal setting and iterative assessment, Goal Plan Do Review, Goal Attainment Scaling, principles of cognitive rehabilitation

Day 2:

  • Communication treatments for CCD: Meta cognitive strategy training, IMPACT training program, Social cognition treatments (eg Reading a Smile)
  • Communication Partner training programs: TBI Express, TBIConneCT, convers-ABI-lity
PM:
  • Self directed digital health approaches to CCD treatment: Social brain toolkit: interact-ABI-lity, social-ABI-lity
  • Case studies incorporating treatment approaches described today, plus opportunity for case discussion from participants; future directions in CCD rehabilitation

 

Terms and Regulations

    • All video or audio recordings, or using mobile devices for filming or photography is prohibited during the seminar.
    • Contingency Plan in case of Bad Weather: If Typhoon Signal No. 3, Red, or Amber Rainstorm Signal is hoisted, the seminar will be held as scheduled. If Typhoon Signal No.8 or above, or Black Rainstorm Signal remains hoisted by 6:30 am on the event date or other unforeseeable circumstances, the seminar will be switched to Zoom. You will be informed of the Zoom link by email in due course.

 

Refund & Exchange Policy

    • Speech and Hearing Social Enterprise (SHSE) reserves the right to cancel event due to insufficient enrolment in order to ensure the best use of resources. All fees paid will be refunded in accordance with the related procedures.
    • For applying for a refund, applicants need to submit the request by e-mail at the latest 7 days before the event day. SHSE will deduct 50% of the registration fee as administrative expenses and refund 50% of the fee to the participants. Refund request raised within 7 days before the event day will not be accepted.
    • If SHSE cancel event due to administrative reason, all fees paid will be refunded in accordance with the related procedures.
    • Refund would not be granted to participants who cannot attend the event due to personal reason. SHSE shall consider the request on a case-by-case basis for event postponement.
    • SHSE reserves the right to amend the event details without prior notice and reserves the final decision on any disputes.
