Description
Perceptual assessment of cleft speech is at the core of speech methodology in the field of Cleft Lip and Palate. It is the gold standard in providing outcome data for clinical assessment and research to support evidence-based practice in the field. Although there is yet no single internationally and standardized approach, there is a range of specified and internationally agreed upon articulation and non-articulation parameters in cleft palate speech and velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). Accurate and valid assessment of speech in individuals with a cleft condition also requires a clinical tool that adheres not only to international guidelines but also to the phonetics and the phonology of the spoken language being assessed. A group of speech therapists in the field has developed the Cantonese-Cleft Speech Assessment Tool (C-CSAT: Yiu, Chan, Choi, Pereira., 2019) for this purpose.
In this seminar, participants will be introduced to Cleft Lip and Palate, primary surgery of lip and palate, the range of speech parameters in the assessment of cleft palate speech and/or VPI and surgical management of VPI. Participants will be orientated to the clinical tool and have practice undertaking ratings and transcription of cleft palate speech using the tool and with case studies.

Biography of Speakers
Ms. YIU Oi Yan, Yoyo is a speech therapist from the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital (HKCH). She received her academic and post-graduate training from the University of Hong Kong (BSc Speech & Hearing Science and M MedSc). She started her speech therapy experience in a pre-school setting prior to joining the Hospital Authority. One of her clinical and research interests is the Cleft Lip and Palate population, with the centralization of paediatric cleft services to the HKCH and her involvement in the development of C-CSAT. Ms. Yiu has a strong collaboration with the medical team in both clinical services and research. Her work on cleft lip and palate has been presented in various local and international conferences.
Ms. CHAN Ching Shun, Sabina is a graduate from the Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, the University of Hong Kong and is a practising speech therapist. She received a Masters degree in Applied Linguistics and a second Master degree in Clinical Gerontology where she undertook research in different areas. She has been working in Queen Elizabeth Hospital for many years and recently moved to the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital. She has worked with many patients with a cleft condition in recent years and has the passion to have a standardized reporting and documentation system for cleft palate speech and/or velopharyngeal dysfunction, hence her involvement with the development of the C-CSAT.
Ms. CHOI Kai Yan, Cello has a Bachelor’s degree from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages of CUHK and became a speech therapist after completing the Master of Speech Therapy programme at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. There, she had the opportunity to work with clients with a cleft condition within the Cleft Lip and Palate clinic with Dr. Pereira. Ms. Choi worked in Queen Elizabeth Hospital after graduation and continued to maintain interest and passion for cleft speech. Her role in the working group and development of the C-CSAT was around her academic background in phonology and phonetics and her clinical speech therapy experiences in the area of cleft lip and palate. She was recently transferred to the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital.
Dr. PEREIRA Valerie Jane is Senior Lecturer with the Division of Speech Therapy, Dept. of Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery (CUHK).
